South Metter Walking Tour

The South Metter Residential Historic District has more than 75 late 19th and early 20th century residential structures located along the landscaped, divided boulevards of South Lewis, Rountree, and Kennedy streets between Hiawatha and Vertia streets.

This walking tour will take you past many of those historical homes. We have highlighted the twenty that were built in 1920 or earlier. There are also many other interesting homes in the District.

Park in the 100th block of South Kennedy Street near the library, courthouse, or Primitive Baptist Church.

Walk south along the west side of Kennedy. You will pass the Josh Everett house at 230 S Kennedy. Continue walking to Neal Street. Turn left for one block to S Rountree. Turn Left again.

Walk north on the west side of S Rountree. You will pass the Williams-Cistola, Ward L Jones, and Perry Rountree houses.

Cross S Rountree to the east side. Walk on north past the E J Register house. Turn right onto Vertia Street. Walk one block to S Lewis and turn right.

Walk south along the west side of S Lewis. You will pass the E Fagan Franklin, Franklin-Powell, Trapnell-Boyd, Jim Dixon, Trapnell-Sommers, Preston Trapnell and Pat Wright houses. This may be a highlight of your walk. Cross over to the east side of S Lewis and walk back north.

You will soon see the J B Parrish, Collins-Simmons-Bennett, Jasper Brown, and Davidson-Brantley houses.

Continue north to East Broad Street. Here you have a choice. You can continue straight on north to take the North Metter Walking Tour. Or you can turn left, walk two blocks through the Metter Business District, and you're back where you parked.

If you want to learn more about the history of these homes, refer to Chapter Three "Historic Homes and Buildings" in the book "The History of Metter and Candler County, Georgia."
